Nursing Assistant and Orderlies

Job Summary

Nursing assistants and orderlies are responsible for the general care of patients in a hospital, nursing facilities or homes.


Nursing assistants and orderlies generally carry out the following duties:

  • Offer physical assistance to patients or residents such as bathing, cleaning, re-positioning, walking

  • Monitor and record patient vitals such as blood pressure and temperature

  • Notify other medical staff on patient complaints and reports

  • Serve patients with meals and help them eat


A state-approved education program along with passing the state competency exam is usually required for Nurses. A high school diploma is required for orderlies. In terms of licensing and certification, some nursing assistants are given the title, Certified Nursing Assistant (CAN) but titles vary among states.


In order to test nursing assistants and orderlies effectively, employers usually administers the Work Ethics Test and the Cognitive IQ test , which assess the individual’s attitude to work as well as their standards. The Customer Service Personality test can also be administered to analyze the individual’s personality traits which will help them to provide great service. It also tests their ability to communicate and interact with persons on a regular basis.
