Job Summary

Automotive Service Technicians and Mechanics generally inspect and repair vehicles such as cars, trucks and buses. They must be team players and able to communicate with colleagues and clients. They have an eye for detail and are able to diagnose and fix mechanical problems.

Automotive Service Technicians and Mechanics must have some level of physical strength for lifting and maneuvering heavy equipment and ability to orient themselves in uncomfortable positions regularly. They must exhibit good hand-eye coordination as they are required to remove or install parts and equipment properly.


Duties

Automotive Service Technicians and Mechanics generally carry out the following duties:

  • Troubleshoot mechanical problems often with the use of computerized programs and equipment.

  • Inspect and repair vehicles

  • Carry out maintenance procedures such as oil checks, checking fluid levels and rotating tires.

  • Follow maintenance/repair methods via manufacturer specifications, manuals and previous experience

  • Checking to make sure all stages of maintenance/repair methods are completed

  • Communicate effectively to clients any problems

 

Qualifications

Usually, a post secondary automotive program is required by employers for Automotive Service Technicians and Mechanics. Courses that may be beneficial to aspiring Automotive Service Technicians and Mechanics at the high school level are automotive repair, mathematics, computers and electronics.
